Speaking of suicide…

…which we were, because it’s a laugh a minute around here.

Recently San Antonio resident George Dickerson wrote two emails to his City Councilwoman, Elena Guajardo (pictured), to complain, in a vaguely racist way, about a nightclub across the street from his subdivision. The emails were sent from his company email account. The Councilwoman didn’t like the racist tone, and contacted Dickerson’s superiors, who quickly fired him. A few days later he killed himself, and left a note blaming his despair on the “recent events.”

Yesterday a friend of Dickerson’s showed up at City Council to harrass Guajardo, insisting she resign. The friend said: “I’m gonna drive you crazy until you resign, only because of one reason—my friend has no voice anymore. I do and you will pay for it.”

I find it hard to believe that Dickerson killed himself purely because he was fired. Chances are, this is a person who had other problems, who considered suicide before. To blame the Councilwoman for Dickerson’s death is to obscure larger and more important questions.

But KSAT.com’s survey results suggest Guajardo may be held accountable in the public’s eye. Of 974 people who voted in the online poll, 70 percent think she should resign.
