In Memoriam: Steve Irwin

I wasn’t really planning on blogging today, as it’s technically a blogger’s day off, but I just want to say that if there’s a heaven, and if there are animals, I hope that’s where Steve Irwin is. The naturalist and director of the Australia Zoo was killed by a stingray yesterday, and I feel unaccountably sad about his death.

I learned so much from him about animals native to Australia, and his enthusiasm always cheered me up, even in my darkest days. I felt like he was my friend, which I know is a dumb way to think about someone who calls himself the Crocodile Hunter. Thing is, that was just a sexy name to draw people in to what he really wanted to talk about: why these animals were important, and why environmentalism had to be a top priority. His American wife Terri was also on the show, and I liked her down-to-earth attitude. The employees at his wildlife habitat were funny and lighthearted.

I’m so sorry to hear of Irwin’s death. But if he thought about dying at all, I’ll bet he’d have wanted to go out this way—communing with the animals, and maybe even pissing them off. Rest in peace, Steve. We’ll miss you.

Hi, Liz. I loved the Crocodile Hunter, too. Famous people die every day, but Steve Irwin’s death really got to me. I’m depressed most of the time, so I’ve learned to place a high value on the type of exuberance and lust for life this delightfully crazy guy exemplified. Suddenly – gone. Crikey! It really got to me.

I couldn’t believe it when I heard that Steve Irwin died. I still can’t believe it. I don’t see how such a terrible, unfair thing could have happened to him. He was such an amazing and helpful person to other people, animals, and the world. He contributed so much knowledge to the public about caring for all animals and the world in which we live. I don’t know of a single person who hasn’t heard of him. He will never be forgotten. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

The untimely passing of Steve Irwin is a great tragedy. This has effected my family more than I could have imagined; he has been a great influence on myself and my two boys. The world will never be the same. In the past, I have dealt with this type of emotional pain through music. Being a song writer and composer, I have written musical compositions and songs to honour friends, family, and fallen heroes to ease the pain and commemorate the contributions they’ve made in life. Steve falls under the obvious catagory of “HERO.” Please accept and share with the world this musical tribute in honour of the great “CROCODILE HUNTER” Steve Irwin.. WE LOVE YOU STEVE!!

Sincerely:
David James
