I try to be open-minded…
I’m fascinated by this kind of thing. Sure, the lady could’ve been paid. She could’ve been faking. And yes, this guy looks and talks like Thomas Haden Church and should probably dry his hair when he gets out of the shower. But what if this works? I have such a terrible phobia of vomit, and it really causes me a lot of trouble. I don’t think I could go through a similar treatment given the nature of that phobia, but boy, I’d love to have it resolved.

I learned this technique in a session of my time in an Intensive Outpatient Program at Kaiser in San Francisco. We didn’t use it for anything so dramatic (just generalized anxiety) and I haven’t used it since, but it is starting to filter into the professional psychiatric field.
I think it is one of those things where psych folks know that it can’t hurt, and if it helps even a little it is worth it as another tool in the arsenal.
Seeing this, I’m likely to go dig out the handout they gave us and give it a more serious try.
