"There are women in jails who remain shackled and handcuffed all day for months at a time—even if they’re sick, even if they’re pregnant, even if they’re in labor."

What you write here is so important for people to understand, thank you for this post. My friend adopted 3 children. The mother of 2 of the kids was in prison. When she was in labor, she was taken to a hospital in shackles; gave birth and was removed by guards in shackles immediately afterward. No recovery time. This was an undigified and inhumane treatment in my opinion. She was in prison for drug related reasons.

I'm finding it real hard to share your optimism about any lessons learned by Ms Hilton. Maybe if she had truly been treated like the average person, with no status to speak of, she would have gotten a real taste of what consequences are. I just don't believe that even came close to happening. So here only "lesson learned" might be that, "yes, it's true, you do get preferential treatment because you are a celebrity".

Hi Liz. This is my first visit here, after having seen a link to your blog from Moodgarden, where I have a blog.

Your commentary on the prison system from a female perspective is really gripping and informative. I've been on psych units too many times as an inpatient so I have met many women who were part of the prison system, and my heart goes out to them. Thank you for showing compassion for them here. Knowledge often yields compassion. Thanks for spreading the word about these women.

Hi Liz!
I was at the DBSA meeting last night. It was a pleasure listening to your story and ,yes, this is my first time blogging!! I was diagnosed 22 years ago and did well until a year ago. It has been a struggle since then. Only in the recent months, have I realized the importance of keeping in touch with others who have this disease. The contact provides, not just hope, but reminders to be aware of those triggers that set us spiraling.

Thank you.
