Video of the Day: Life Affirmation or Pyramid Scheme?

This whole “The Secret” and “Law of Attraction” thing is starting to creep me out. There’s a lot of harm that can me done by telling people all they need to do is think positively to have positive results. But also, anything that needs to resort to insurance-commercial-meets-public-access-television-meets-powerpoint-
presentation can’t be that helpful.

No single image is particularly offensive or disturbing (except, maybe, the one of the credit card that says “convenience,” but when you stick them all together…

It’s old fashioned Calvinism with a new name in my opinion. I find it interesting that the people who push the Secret on me are usually (not always) people whose lives have gone very well and who have no major health or financial problems.

I refuse to believe that I attracted my kidney failure to myself nor that talking to my kidneys or the universe will reverse it. Instead I do what is under my control to help, diet, exercise and drugs. Call me stupid, but I think that’s more likely to do me good…

I must admit that “The Secret” really isn’t a secret at all. It’s someones way of not only making money, but trying to convince us all that we need to think and feel a certain way. Hmmmm, I don’t know about you, but first off I don’t take very well to someone who thinks they know me inside and out. I think “The Secret” is all balled into two other words….”Common Sense”. Lynn

This whole “secret” phenomena has made me sick for months. Not only are these unscrupulous “teachers” making millions off of other peoples desperation for happiness ~ but; they are also injecting the idea that anything bad or unhappy in our lives is a result of our own thinking!!!
Yeah, that’s right. Everyone with illnesses of any kind mental or physical just thought it up and attracted it into their lives because it is just so wonderful being ill.
Positive thinking? Yes, it is a wonderful thing. Norman Vincent Peale wrote about it many many years ago. However; blaming ourselves for misfortunes, health issues or losses is just irresponsible and insulting to any persons sense of self esteem.
The only secret in all of this is the amount of money these greedy people are making!

This little video intrigues me. Having apparantly lived under a rock lately I had no idea what “The Secret” means.

The video shows happy people acheiving happy goals and having happy lives. On the surface there’s nothing wrong with that.

But, the responders here make it sound more like a cult. Coming from a position of ignorance I can see why someone who was unhappy might visit that website after seeing the clip. Then they could be sucked into the cult quite nicely. Scary.

Liz, you already know how I feel about “The Secret” …

For those who haven’t heard my stock response to this claptrap, if I were to try to create what I visualize while on a manic jag, I would end up in a ward, in prison — or dead.
