Cardiff research may help spell relief for thousands of bipolar sufferers

PEOPLE suffering from the mental illness bipolar disorder have been given fresh hope of new treatments by Cardiff scientists.

A research team at Cardiff University has found two genes associated with the illness.

It is hoped that the breakthrough discovery will pave the way to new treatments and end the stigma associated with the condition.

For more, go here. But beware: This article has yet another reference to Ben Stiller having bipolar disorder, which he does not. He actually said that as a (very dumb) joke a while ago, and the media jumped all over it.

Adam Korvin Says:

I find it difficult to believe that any discovery of genes for bipolar will spell relief for anyone, given that the researchers haven’t a ghost of a clue how to “treat” a gene.

Also, looking at the social forces we enjoy today, I’d suggest it is likely that discovering a “gene” for bipolar will cause MORE, rather than less, stigma.

Katie Says:

Right. The only way to “treat” a gene would seem to be eugenics. I find it a little chilling myself.
