Who’s Worth More: Person or Elephant?

Aug 22 2008 | Comments 2

This is the question so eloquently emobied in an email to me from a TTWS reader (who I think wants to remain anonymous on this one, but I’m not sure) who pointed me to a NYT story about a depressed and anxious elephant named Jenny.

The reader says:

I thought this NY Times story interesting given the lack of concern so frequently evidenced for people in psychiatric hospitals. We can only hope that the public outcry which resulted in respect and care for this noble creature will one day be extended to all humans in our nation’s psychiatric hospitals.

Here here.

I think some people learn compassion from animals so I am grateful for the interest in Jenny.

I would love better mental health care for myself but Jenny may be a starting point in some households of this discussion.

I think we (animals included) are all in this together. The great funk is sadly universal.
