You have a point, but for me as a Scientist and a Geneticist, there is no question or even doubt that Sarah Palin meets ALL the criteria of a Bipolar Manic patient on loose. This is a very commonly accepted belief in my community, the scientific community to be precise from very early on and her awkward resignation decision and her very strange speech delivery just left me ever more convinced. My best friend, a psychologist mentioned Palin was a subject of discussions as a bipolar patient who is roaming wild at her school among the PhD students. Just look up the symptoms on wiki and you’ll see her described in all the symptoms. I stopped blaming her for anything ever since I was convinced on her condition.
My husband who is a MD diagnosed her informally based on Palin’s extreme similarity in behavior to his ex wife who was unfortunately a bipolar patient but a genius scientist herself( many bipolar patients are quite genius). My husband’s son is also bipolar. To us, bipolar is not a condition we would like to throw out there and see where it sticks, as scientists, we have no desire or need to put labels on people who are just born a certain way. I would suggest you’ll urge some serious psychologists contacting Palin and get her evaluated just for safety of her family and herself, bipolar is one of the most difficult conditions for diagnosis and can be very devastating if left undiagnosed and untreated.

There are many things about Palin that I would think are evidence of twisted view of the world and reality.

It’s the well-documented Personality Disorder that so many people suffer from:

Republicanism.

palin is a nightmare, yeah?

To keep positive for my mental health, i’m much happier that you blogged that the mental health parity was earmarked on the economic bail out.

wouldn’t it be great to have a veep who championed mental illness issues? mrs. gore would have done that, she said so, her depression experiences gave her that mission.

god forbide, mc’cant gets in, but if he does, maybe palin can concentrate on the mentally challenged community issues, as her new son has downs.

pet peeve when people pull out bipolar to cover things as simple as high energy multitasking or verbal rambling (which is really due to not knowing what the f is up.)

honestly, this debate is going to be high entertainment for us tonight.

i’m convinced obama will win, so hope not to eat words.

This is why i resent having a bipolar diagnosis. this women is an ignorant, bigoted rube. that is what makes her unfit. there is no reason to even talk about whether or not she has a bipolar dx.

So she says calling Palin BP makes BP “synonymous with bad behavior,” then goes on herself to make BP synonymous with bad behavior. And “career under-achievement?” I’m sure that’s true for a fair number of people, but BP isn’t exactly a disease linked to under-achievement, esp. if you include BP2.

She does appear to be some kind of “advocate,” though of what it’s a little hard to tell. Her site has some topical if poorly written & utterly non-authoritative info. But it also advertises her website-building business, claiming that she’s trying to earn money to make up for the “very dumb things” she did while manic. That doesn’t seem like a terribly effective way to combat stigma.

According to Furious Seasons, Daily Kos has a big story up today about Palin’s supposed bipolarity making her unfit to be vice president.

IMHO, lots of things make Sarah Palin unfit to be vice president, but that diagnosis, even if verified, is not one of them.

To think the DK folks are supposed to be “enlightened.” Don’t make me puke. (And I’m a committed Obamaniac.)

Good Lord. As a person who battles depression every day, I’m torn.

On the one hand, this isn’t an official diagnosis for Palin. Her views are her views, and there should not be an “easy” way to explain that stuff away. Just accept that this woman is the 21st century Phyllis Schlafly and be done with it!

On the other hand, though mental illness tends to be more accepted now than it ever has been, it is still seen as a viable reason for shunning good people, and, since it is not easily quantifiable in that one can do blood tests for depression or check a urine sample for bipolar disorder, it tends to be shrugged off by the general population. The idea of functioning (and even successful) members of the world’s population coping with mental illness at the same time they are running football teams or doing key scientific research or solving the problems of diplomacy is still a tough one for most mortals to wrap around their heads.

I’d say, in the end: don’t try to explain away the parts of people you don’t like as being diseased parts. It makes it sound as though they can’t help being Republican, reactionary, or bigoted. As far as Palin’s views on abortion, foreign policy, and the economy go, she most certainly can change those “diseased” parts of herself without the use of pharmaceuticals.
