Depression Confession: Rachel Maddow

My crush on Rachel Maddow grows each day. As if the Ph.D. and left-wing passion weren’t enough, Newsweek reports:

Maddow’s achievements do not always come easily. What only those close to her know is that she has suffered from cyclical depression since puberty that, she says, you can set your watch by. At her lowest points, she loses her sense of smell: “It’s a warning sign that like, ‘Oh, I’m not going to be able to live with myself for the next 48 hours’. It’s weird.”

What cracks me up about Newsweek is sentences like the one bolded above. It’s kinda like that whole thing of what-only-those-in-our-offices-know-is-50,000-words-of-really-important-stuff.

Yeah, I’ve been watching her show since you mentioned her before. Googled her, she’s a Rhodes scholar, too. Brains, beauty, liberal, and a great sense of humor make an attractive package.

Re the Newsweek clip: Very interesting. Thanks for sharing this.

I’m hoping her attitude will make her poison to the GOP. If not, if they feel stuck with her, my guess is her strident arrogance and fanaticism isn’t going to play well with the mainstream, although she will have a group of diehard supporters, which I personally find hard to watch.

I do not think Sarah Palin is a stupid woman. She was clearly over her head. I cannot imagine why or how she found the scrutiny her daughter Bristol was under a surprise. Bristol actually got off very lightly. One of the big turn offs to me about Ms. Palin was her willingness to expose a vulnerable 17-year old in crisis to the world media. Now I see Ms. Palin was merely clueless. Do they not have supermarket taboids in AK??? I practically live under a rock in a rural area of a rural state and even I would know better than to do that to my child.

Thanks for this. I find it encouraging. I was afraid Sarah was savvier than she apparently is.

If women are allowed to say that famous gay men are “what-a-shames,” men should be allowed to say that Rachel Maddow is … well, drop-dead gorgeous, and assuredly someone who would not at all have lacked for male suitors (including this one) should she have been so inclined. Lefty, brilliant, charming, and a fellow traveler too?! My heart goes pitter-patter.

(In all seriousness, it’s wonderful that Rachel can have success being WHO SHE IS, in her whole person and not just politically or sexually, and that she is in a very happy relationship to boot.)
