This Is How I Know I’ve Gotten Old

Apr 30 2009 | Comments 6

When I was growing up, my big male crush was Richard Gere. Just watch the first couple minutes of this truly terrible movie, and you might see why:

Now, I see this photo of Gere:

And I realize: Years have gone by. Poo.

A “Manic High”?

Apr 30 2009 | Comments 8

Sometimes I really get a kick out of the comments on my YouTube channel. The latest is from a person who thinks my most recent video is evidence of my having a “manic high.”

How nice it must be to be able to diagnose someone without knowing them! I haven’t had a true manic high since the ’90s, fortunately. Other comments that are much more cruel are less bothersome, like the people who tell me they wish I’d overdose. That’s just good comedy. But the “manic high” assessment upsets me. Perhaps because it touches that nerve — the fear I have of returning to my unwell self. It gave me pause. Am I sliding back? Do I seem like a freak?

You know what’s the worst thing about that video? That I’m boring. That’s the disease.

Nightmares Do Come True

Don't let me blow away

Don't let me blow away

Pretty much every night I have a dream that something horrible has happened to Hannah (pictured above), my sweet Chihuahua. Turns out, I have reason to worry. From ABC News:

Bystanders at a Detroit-area flea market were stunned this weekend when high winds from a passing storm picked up a couple’s Chihuahua puppy and blew her out of sight.

After two days of searching and consulting with a pet psychic, Tinkerbell was found almost a mile away in the woods dirty but unharmed. …

“We were shocked when we found her,” Dorothy Utley, 72, told The Detroit News. “You don’t know how happy we were. We love her so much.”

It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s a … Flying Chihuahua?

Cartoon-a-Thon

Apr 29 2009 | Comments 3

In honor of May being Mental Health Awareness Month, Chato B. Stewart — who runs the blog Mental Health Humor and Cartoons (which really could be the Funny or Offensive motherlode, if you think about it) — is starting his second annual Cartoon-a-Thon. He’ll try to draw one cartoon for each day of the month to bring awareness and rasie funds. Click here to learn more.

10 Tools to Live Your Life Well: Piss Off!

Apr 27 2009 | Comments 15

Lists are very popular. Americans love lists, and publications, blogs and organizations looking for PR also loves lists. Hence my cynical interpretation of Mental Health America’s newest goofy initiative Live Your Life Well, which offers 10 tools and their benefits. Now, there are certainly things we could all do to promote healthy living, especially in the context of chronic illness. But doesn’t anyone ever have an original thought? Here are MHA’s tools:

1. Connect with others
2. Stay positive
3. Get physically active
4. Help others
5. Get enough sleep
6. Create joy and satisfaction
7. Eat well
8. Take care of your spirit
9. Deal better with hard times
10. Get professional help if you need it

Why doesn’t anyone ever have anything really radical to say? How about: “masturbate often,” for instance. Or: “fantasize about punching a cashier if you’re in a long line.”

Let’s make our own list, people! This is a call for submissions. Bring it.
