This Is How I Know I’ve Gotten Old

Apr 30 2009 | Comments 6

When I was growing up, my big male crush was Richard Gere. Just watch the first couple minutes of this truly terrible movie, and you might see why:

Now, I see this photo of Gere:

And I realize: Years have gone by. Poo.

Another is I make a sound-grunt when getting up. The sound somehow helps in the getting up process. Children/young just get up without effort.
Another is I still call my Ipod a “walkman” in my mind, even though I know it’s an Ipod.
“You sing along with the elevator music.” is another definite sign.

I’m often reminded of my own aging and mortality as reflected in the aging and mortality experienced by others with a special focus on actors and other notables. I recently watched “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” – how apropos – which I originally saw as a child. I couldn’t help saying to myself as well known actors of an earlier era appeared, “This one is dead; that one is gone; gosh, I am growing old.”

Another sign of aging: As a child I couldn’t figure out why anyone would want to buy LP sets containing hits of the 1940s advertised on TV. After all, this was old music when for the same price one could buy new music. Now that I find commercials for “The Greatest Hits of the 80’s” more then a little interesting, I understand the desire to buy old music all too well.

Reminds me of Jean-Paul Belmondo without the broken nose. Maybe it’s just the cigarette.

Hi Liz, I remember feeling the same about this movie but then I found out it was an homage of sorts to Robert Bresson’s Pickpocket and I have wanted to see it again. Anyway, Days of Heaven would be the better choice. Actually, he doesn’t look all that bad. Gravity seems to be making inroads. Part of the human experience. My main female crush was Diana Rigg in the Avengers. She turned 70 last year. Oh my goodness, Dave
