Suicide Affects So Many

Jun 4 2009 | Comments 8

You might have heard that David Carradine hanged himself in Thailand. Very sad. But I can’t help being haunted by these words in the MSNBC obit:

… his body was found by a hotel maid at 10 a.m. Thursday morning

Can you imagine the trauma this woman suffered, seeing a man who’d used the curtain cord to string himself up in a gruesome fashion? She’ll never get that out of her head, especially since he’s an international celebrity. What do you say to your family, your children, when you get home. “Today was hard …” She’ll never be the same.

I think about that a lot when I’m suicidal: Who would find me? How would they live with that? There’s no one I would want to do that to.

The “who would find me” question is why I never got as far as making a plan. I couldn’t come up with anything where there wouldn’t have been a chance of one of my siblings finding me, and i couldn’t inflict that on a stranger, much less them.

Yes, Liz, It’s good to know that suicide deeply affetcs at least 3 to 5 people who practically never get well. Another sad fact is people from a dead person family are much more vulnerable to commit suicide themselves – I presume it’s percieved as a possible solution.
And Carradine was great, he was fantastic in Kill Bill. Shit. Not a way to go.

“I can confirm that we found his body, naked, hanging in the closet,” Teerapop said. From the article.

Do you get naked to kill yourself? I don’t think so. Something else could have happened.

Mitch Says:

Articles I’ve read have said the cord was around his neck AND other parts of his body. To me that seems more like an auto-erotic asphyxiation related death. Still difficult for someone to find, but sets an entirely different tone to his tragic death.

At the depressed times I don’t believe that the person who is thinking about committing suicide thinks about who will find them or how it affects their families. If they thought more about it I don’t think allot of them would do it.

Brenda, I am of the same mind as you based upon my own personal experiences as a support person and caregiver.

When I’ve questioned my spouse after each of her 9 suicide attempts her mindset was to end the torture, pain and the agony as she just couldn’t go on. Although several times she also expressed the feeling we’d all be better off with out her.

Changing the perspective for a moment she had no thoughts of the affect upon me as the visions of her in bed turning blue and the other attributes I need not discuss have certainly left an indelible mark upon my psyche. It is not a pretty picture or to have the feeling of helplessness and then to visit the ICU for almost a week not knowing whether my love would survive or exist as a vegetable. It is hard to accept that I couldn’t prevent these actions but the fact remains that any individual intent upon offing themselves cannot be prevented from doing so.

Hopefully the thought of the loved ones left behind and their emotional trauma for some will act as a deterrent not to take or consider this final option.

On a lighter note and by implication of some additional news information and alternative thoughts expressed here, Dawdy and his “Mini Me’s” might be upset and dismayed that they can’t attribute this one to psychotropic medications.

Warmly,
Herb
