“Tweenorexia”

Jun 30 2009 | Comments 2

How the media delights in coining new terms — the latest being “tweenorexia.” You can imagine them sitting around in a meeting getting all hopped up on coffee and donuts, and patting each other on the back for thinking of it. Ooh, nice one. Perhaps I’ve been in journalism too long.

The trend, as represented by a recent study, is troubling, though. And what’s truly sad is that even the most well-adjusted teens and women I know would see this video and think, in a tiny, horrible corner of their brain: “God, I wish I could get that thin–just for a while.” Sigh.

Mari Says:

While I have sympathy for the many women and teenagers (and pre-teens!) who suffer from ED, I can honestly say upon watching this segment (or other shows about eating disorders), I’ve never wanted to be that thin, even for a fraction of a second.

Seriously, what do parents expect when they are complicit in creating a society that obsesses about weight and creates a culture of fat hate? Ya think that anti-obesity programs might play a part? Uh…duh. Even when I was younger, back in the dark ages, more girls cared about being thin than about doing well in school. These people in the video act like anorexia just dropped out of the sky from no where! Wha?!?
