Bizarre New Hobby

Jan 20 2010 | Comments 11

I don’t know what’s come over me, but I’m newly fascinated by the websites of businesses that craft furniture for psychiatric facilities. I often think about how different that furniture is than the chairs, tables and beds in the “real” world — no hard edges, nothing you can use to kill yourself.

Yet despite the depressing reality of the nature of their business, these websites sell their products as though they’re just like any other product. It’s kind of surreal. Many such companies also make furniture for correctional facilities, and some have transitioned into exclusive manufacturing for prisons and jails — which in the States, is a growth industry of collossal proportion.

Check these sites out if you have a morbid fascination, as I do:

Glasspec
PSI LLC

What a wonderful way to make the already sterile, dispiriting environment on a psychiatric unit even more sterile and dispiriting. [Paradoxically such environments are referred to as the "therapeutic milieu."] Place a few dogeared, aged copies of National Geographic in the “community room” and you have yourself a psychiatric hospital.

Lol, Joe – my psychiatrist has stacks of those magazines in his waiting room … I thought it was just him, I had no idea it was that way throughout the psych world.

Regarding the booming business that these companies are tapping into, I think it’s a sad testament to where society’s heading; but on the plus side, at least we’ll all be able to enjoy the occasional boob shot in the National Geographic magazines while sitting in the sterile, rampage-proof waiting rooms, while twiddling our thumbs and toes ;-)

Traditionally, psych furniture is very, very heavy…so it can’t be thrown. Have to give it to the patients that still try, though.

I must point out my love for your kind-heartedness for those people who really need help on this particular area of interest. Your very own commitment to getting the message all through appeared to be remarkably important and have constantly helped regular people much like me to reach their desired goals. Your entire warm and helpful facts implies this much to me and especially to my mates. Warm regards; from everyone of us.
